Project Proposal

My final project for integrating activity will be in the form of a screenplay and a short film, it will focus on the theme of lost connection, seeing as the theme for our class is connections. I chose to write a screenplay and turn it into a short film because that is what I am hoping and wishing to do as a career in the future. It has been a big interest of mine to write scripts for television and movies for a long time, but I never saw it as a reasonable career choice until a few years ago.

I have taken many literature and creative writing classes all throughout high school as well as in the two years that I have been in Cegep. In high school, I was part of an advanced liberal arts program that focused on the English language, history, and geography. Also, in high school, I took drama for three years which often required me to have to write and act out scripts. I am also currently taking a creative writing workshopping course.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic started the isolation and distance have proven to be heavily difficult for many people. A lot of people rely on connecting with others to get by, and now without that physical connection with others, people are often falling out of touch with people they were once close to. A big part of screenwriting is knowing your audience, and so with a theme as broad as connections, I figured I should work with the negative side of a connection, because it is something very relatable to many people no matter what age, gender, race, etc.

The short film will not have any dialogue and will focus mainly on the visual and exterior effects of a lost connection. No dialogue also adds to the idea of isolation which is the prominent factor that leads to the broken connection. I also want to include a clip of a chain-breaking throughout the film to symbolize the loss. I took inspiration from the movie “Full Out” for the chain=breaking clip; in the movie, there was just a simple shot of glass shattering which I found to be really cool.

As a thematic inspiration and a cultural artifact, I have the movie “Everything, Everything,” which has main themes of isolation, the desire for physical human connection, and the fear of illness.

The materials I need to be able to orchestrate this project are a laptop, celtx (a scriptwriting software), DSLR camera, and other equipment that I intend on borrowing from the school, bedroom setting for filming, Filmora9 (editing software).

The schedule to make all of this happen is probably going to be tough to work around and may require some changes, but for the time being it is the following: March 27th- April 3rd for collecting clips and audio samples, April 3rd – April 10th for writing the script, April 10th – April 17th preparing a schedule and setting for video shooting, April 17th – April 24th rent and pick up equipment from school, April 24th – May 1st for filming and start of editing, and lastly May 1st – May 12th for most of the editing and final touches.

My main goal for this project is to show the true impact of having a connection and the effects of when it is lost. I also hope to use this project as a way to gain more experience and work to provide for when I apply to universities. Not only that, but I hope with this project I can see if screenwriting is something I really want to pursue as a career and not just something I would enjoy doing on the side.
